August 28 – National Cherry Turnovers Day

Today is National Cherry Turnovers Day!

This day celebrates a scrumptious breakfast or dessert. Typically made with pie dough or puff pastry Cherry Turnovers are wrapped around a cherry filling and baked until golden brown. The cherry filling makes these turnovers both sweet and sour and a tasty treat for your taste buds.

At more than 12,000 ORAC (Oxygen radical absorbance capacity) units per hundred grams of fruit, cherries have a higher antioxidant capacity of vitamins A, B, and C than grapes, oranges, plums, raspberries and strawberries combined.

In the 18th century, developing gout or arthritis meant living with pain and patience. As it turns out some tart cherry juice may have helped alleviate the pain.
