Today is National Grandparents Day!
Grandparents Day is celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day.
The motivation for National Grandparents Day originated with Marian McQuade, a housewife from Fayette County, West Virginia who raised fifteen children and had forty-three grandchildren. Her primary motivation was to champion the cause of lonely elderly in nursing homes. She also hoped to persuade grandchildren to strengthen the bond with their grandparents. Today would be a great opportunity to talk to your grandparents about your family history or look through old photo albums together.
If your grandparents are no longer with us, consider volunteering to work with the elderly in your area.
In 1978 President Jimmy Carter proclaimed National Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day.
Happy Grandparents Day to all the grandparents!
