May 1 – National Law Day

Each year on May 1st National Law Day is celebrated in the United States.

Charles S. Rhyne, President of the American Bar Association (ABA), originated the idea in 1957 as a day to honor the law.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower established the first Law Day in 1958. Congress issued a joint resolution establishing May 1 as the official annual date for the event in 1961.

The theme for Law Day 2012 is “No Courts, No Justice, No Freedom,” with the goal of highlighting the importance of the court system and the seriousness of the funding shortfalls that endanger the ability of the court system to provide access to justice.

Your state and local bar associations around the country have scheduled events to honor Law Day.
