June 7th – National Donut Day!

 
national donut day 2013Each year National Donut Day is celebrated on the first Friday in June.

This event was created in 1938 by The Salvation Army to honor The Salvation Army Lassie’s who served coffee and donuts to the soldiers during World War I.

Salvation Army volunteers set up “huts” overseas in abandoned buildings close to the front lines. The Salvation Army Lassie’s provided baked goods, writing supplies and clothes mending to the soldiers. Serving the sweet treats brought comfort to the soldiers who were likely missing the comfort of their family.

The Lassie’s found it difficult to provide freshly baked goods due to the condition of the hut’s. Two volunteer’s Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance decided to fry donuts on soldiers’ helmets. Seven donuts were able to be fried per batch. March 24 – Homemade Banana Ice Cream

 

I was asked to re-post this by a family member. They love Banana Ice Cream and these are healthy and easy ways to make it. Adding walnuts and chocolate would be a great addition.

When it comes to awareness about salt (sodium) consumption, most of us know that consuming too much salt can hurt our health. “Too much sodium raises blood pressure, which is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke,” says CDC Director Dr. Thomas R. Frieden

But for many people, the awareness stops there; they don’t realize where most of the salt they take in is coming from. Is it the salt shaker on the table or by the stove? Is it the salt that naturally occurs in foods? These are indeed the source of some of the salt Americans consume, but the greatest amount—about 65 percent–comes from packaged foods and restaurant items.

According to the CDC, 10 types of foods are responsible for more than 40 percent of people’s sodium intake: luncheon meats such as deli ham or turkey; pizza; poultry; soups; cheeseburgers and other sandwiches; pasta dishes; meat dishes such as meat loaf; and snack foods such as potato chips, pretzels and popcorn; and breads and rolls, which in themselves are not too high in sodium until you consider the amount that we typically eat of these products.[1]

Go bananas over this sweet, sweet bread because today is National Banana Bread Day! There’s no better way to celebrate “National Banana Bread Day” than by baking a quick loaf. Celebrate with others around the nation with this delicious baked good.

Banana bread is a sweet, cakelike bread which contains mashed bananas. Banana bread is a quick bread which typically uses baking soda as the leavening agent instead of yeast. Rather than dough, the bread is baked from a thick batter, which does not require kneading.

Banana bread first became a standard feature of American cookbooks with the popularization of baking soda and baking powder in the 1930s (and appears in Pillsbury’s 1933 Balanced Recipes cookbook). The first banana bread recipe was thought to have been created by William Swanson. The home baking revival of the 1960s and the simplicity of its recipe led to an explosion in banana bread’s popularity. The cookbooks of the 1960s added to its popularity because they commonly listed multiple variations of bread that added fruits and nuts.

Banana bread is very popular at bake sales and has become one of the most common items for sale for breakfast in cafés in Australia but the loaf is often less dense than in North America.

January 28 – National Have Fun At Work Day

 

Monday January 28th is “National Have Fun At Work Day”


 

Wanted to post this early so everyone can get organized and plan. HAVE FUN!!


 

Here are some suggestions to help your day be more fun and to help you and your co-workers have a great day!

1. If appropriate at your work place, bring up the “National Have Fun At Work Day” idea to your co-workers. Maybe folks could join in to bring snacks. Or maybe they’d even have other ideas to add.

2. Wear something a little offbeat to work. People will think you’re nuts – or just having a great day. Hopefully it will get the comments started. Perhaps everyone could dress a little offbeat.

3. If you have a small office – or a small department, little gifts are always a great way to begin the day.

4. Food always seems to be a hit around the job site.

5. A white elephant gift exchange is always fun.

6. If your group likes to party together, perhaps you’d rather save your fun until after work . Someone may offer their home or apartment and others join in with food, drinks and games.

7. Many of us may have work-at-home jobs. This national day of fun does NOT exclude you. If you work at home, email a couple of your good clients and share some fun.

If your work keeps you very busy – just sharing a smile and a few fun words can cheer up most everyone.

Keep this appropriate. Yes, we all have work gripes. Today with so many companies downsizing, or heaping more work on fewer people, or just doing all they can to stay in the black – a day with a little fun added can help you keep your sanity.

If you’re looking for something to do today take a walk on the wild side and munch on some blonde brownies.
 
So since blonde brownies aren’t the “normal” brownie we all know and love, they get their own holiday and that’s today!
 
 
This light-colored treat was actually invented in Upper Sandusky, Ohio and there’s a reason why they’re so light. Normally cocoa is added to give a brownie it’s dark brown color and familiar taste, but there is no cocoa in blonde brownies. They contain a good amount of alternate sweetness instead, brown sugar! So these brownies should still satisfy your sweet tooth.

These brownies also contain baking powder, baking soda, brown sugar, salt, butter, flour, eggs, vanilla and whatever else you’d like to add. Most people like to add white chocolate or chocolate chips to their blonde brownies as well as nuts, toffee and coconut. You can get really creative with these brownies.

Fig Newtons, a soft crumbly crust filled with a sweet fig paste. The texture different from any other cookie.

Fig rolls were first mass-produced in 1891 by a Philadelphia baker and fig-lover Charles Roser, who in 1892 patented a machine which inserted fig paste into a cake-like dough with a characteristic chewiness. Roser named his product “Newtons”, after the local town of Newton, Massachusetts.

The Fig Newton is a Nabisco trade-marked pastry filled with fig paste. Their unusual shape is a characteristic that has been adopted by many competitors, such as the generic fig bars sold by most supermarkets.”

Everyone knows homemade cookies are better than store bought, with one exception. The Fig Newton! It’s such a unique cookie in texture, flavor and shape and trying to copy it would be a mistake.

There are actually hundreds of different varieties of figs. They vary in color, shape and size. The most popular is the purple fig followed by the white fig. Fresh figs are in season from June to October. They can be found at many farmers markets and gourmet shops. The fresh figs are costly and hard to find, not all markets and shops carry them. Although figs that are dried; can be found in the grocery stores year round.

Figs are a delicate fruit. Once purchased, they should be rinsed under cold water and refrigerated. Fresh and ripened figs can be kept for two to three days before they start to bruise and spoil. If you purchased figs that are not quite ripe they can remain at room temperature until they mature. Each fig varies as to how long it takes to ripen. They should not be too firm to the touch and not too soft either when ripe.

Figs are very nutritious too. They are a fibrous fruit containing mostly insoluble fiber. This is actually good for the intestines to help the lower digestive tract do its job. Part of the fig fiber is also soluble and when this fiber interacts with the stomach’s digestive juices will slow down digestion of food and give you the feeling of being full longer.

These delicate blossoms are a good source of iron, vitamin B6, potassium and of course fiber. They are also known to regulate fat and cholesterol absorption while promoting a good balance of blood sugar.

Fresh-Strawberry-Ice-CreamIce cream in January? Really? Normally eating ice cream in January would be ok on the west coast, but this year OMGosh it’s cold. Even with the cold weather outside, it won’t stop us from observing National Strawberry Ice Cream Day!

Have you ever noticed fast food chains feature vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry flavors of milkshakes? That’s because the three top flavors of ice cream are vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry, Neapolitan ice cream would be a smart choice for those who can’t make up their minds!

Of all the flavors of ice cream, none shows a greater difference in quality and taste between store-bought and homemade than strawberry.
 
A Couple of Fun Facts:

  • Dolley Madison served strawberry ice cream at President Madison’s second Inaugural Ball in 1813
  • One of the earliest documented uses of strawberry ice cream comes from 1744 when Maryland’s Governor Thomas Bladen began serving strawberry ice cream to impress dignitaries and other house guests.
  • In a survey conducted by the International Ice Cream Association, strawberry is the third most popular ice cream flavor, favored by 5.3% of the population.

    Feel free to use an ice cream maker if you have one or use one of the non-machine methods below:
     
     
    Easiest Ice Cream Ever

    Ingredients: 2 cups buttermilk and 1.5 cups strawberry jam

    Directions: Stir the buttermilk into the jam. Pour into a freezer tray and freeze. Cut into chunks and place into a chilled mixer bowl. Whip until fluffy. Return to tray and cover & freeze until firm. Spoon into sherbet dishes and serve, using crushed strawberries and mint as a garnish (optional)
     
     
    Even Easier Strawberry Ice Cream

    Ingredients:

    • 2 1/2 cups very cold light cream (or half-and-half)
    • 1/2 cup sugar
    • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
    • One 1.25 pound package unsweetened strawberries, frozen

    Directions: Put all the ingredients in the food processor (or bowl) and process (or use hand mixer) until combined, the cream and strawberries forming soft peaks and bits of berry still visible. Put the ice cream in the freezer in airtight container for several hours. Stir once after 2 hours or when edges start to harden. Best served immediately but it keeps pretty well for about a week.

While no one really knows when donuts were invented or who invented them. Doughnuts were originally made as a long twist of dough, not in the ring form that is most common these days. It was also common in England for donuts to be made in a ball shape and injected with Jam after they were cooked, this is still very common in England. The ring donut common to America just seemed to appear, but an American, Hansen Gregory, claimed to have invented it in 1847 when he was traveling on a steam boat. He was not satisfied with the texture of the center of the donut so he pressed a hole in the center with the ship’s pepper box.

• Doughnut vs. Donut? There has been much debate among experts as to whether “doughnut” or “donut” is the proper spelling. “Doughnut” is actually proper, but “donut” is acceptable. If you look in older dictionaries, you’ll only find “doughnut.” However, the Merriam-Webster dictionary now lists “donut” as a variant of “doughnut.” Either way you spell it, they’re still delicious!

• The first Friday in June is designated as National Doughnut Day.

• In the U.S. alone, more than 10 billion donuts are made every year.

• Per capita, Canada has more donut shops than any other country.

• Adolph Levitt invented the first donut machine in 1920.
