June 7th – National Donut Day!

national donut day 2013Each year National Donut Day is celebrated on the first Friday in June.

This event was created in 1938 by The Salvation Army to honor The Salvation Army Lassie’s who served coffee and donuts to the soldiers during World War I.

Salvation Army volunteers set up “huts” overseas in abandoned buildings close to the front lines. The Salvation Army Lassie’s provided baked goods, writing supplies and clothes mending to the soldiers. Serving the sweet treats brought comfort to the soldiers who were likely missing the comfort of their family.

The Lassie’s found it difficult to provide freshly baked goods due to the condition of the hut’s. Two volunteer’s Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance decided to fry donuts on soldiers’ helmets. Seven donuts were able to be fried per batch. Try the original Salvation Army Lassie’s Doughnut Recipe.

For National Donut Day there are donut shops offering freebies or deals.

May 27 – A Memorial Poem

memorial-day1

This prayer caught my eye. A little 3rd grade boy wrote it in 2001. I liked it and just had to post it.

Memorial Day

I think about the people that fought in the wars,
some have died to keep us free.

I think about the men and women,
Who saved lives on land and at sea.

I look at the monuments,
In memory of the brave.

I help plant red flowers
At my grandfather’s grave.

At the parade, I see flags flying,
Red, white and blue.

I watch rows of different uniforms,
Navy, white and brown too.

The soldiers salute with pride.

Memorial Day remembers and honors
those who have died.

Don’t forget the true meaning of this weekend.

I never ask the people who look at my blog to pass a post along to others, but in this case please do so.

Everyone needs to remember why we have BBQ’s and get together with families on this weekend.
This is important. Remember to love your family while you have them.

Please pass it along.

With a high school diploma or college degree in their hands our young people are about to embark on a tough new world, one tougher then when I graduated for sure.

There are so many unknowns and I’m sure concerns for a new graduate these days so I wanted to pass along some encouragement.

These are two quotes I like a lot and I hope they will encourage you in your new life.

Throughout life people will make you mad, disrespect you and treat you bad. Let God deal with the things they do, cause hate in your heart will consume you too.
Will Smith

You are educated. Your certification is in your degree. You may think of it as the ticket to the good life. Let me ask you to think of an alternative. Think of it as your ticket to change the world.

World Salt Awareness Week

This week is “World Salt Awareness Week”

World Salt Awareness Week“World Salt Awareness Week” is held from Monday March 11th to Sunday 17th March. This year’s theme is Less Salt Please, showing how you can reduce the salt in your diet without compromising taste and flavour. For more information visit World Action on Salt website.

When it comes to awareness about salt (sodium) consumption, most of us know that consuming too much salt can hurt our health. “Too much sodium raises blood pressure, which is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke,” says CDC Director Dr. Thomas R. Frieden

But for many people, the awareness stops there; they don’t realize where most of the salt they take in is coming from. Is it the salt shaker on the table or by the stove? Is it the salt that naturally occurs in foods? These are indeed the source of some of the salt Americans consume, but the greatest amount—about 65 percent–comes from packaged foods and restaurant items.

According to the CDC, 10 types of foods are responsible for more than 40 percent of people’s sodium intake: luncheon meats such as deli ham or turkey; pizza; poultry; soups; cheeseburgers and other sandwiches; pasta dishes; meat dishes such as meat loaf; and snack foods such as potato chips, pretzels and popcorn; and breads and rolls, which in themselves are not too high in sodium until you consider the amount that we typically eat of these products.[1]

You can lower your sodium intake by eating fresh, unprocessed foods, and reading product labels to select those lower in sodium. Talk to your healthcare provider about your sodium consumption. To learn more, visit cdc.gov/salt [2]

National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

This is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. I know this is a sensitive subject to some of you but you need to take your health into your own hands and talk to your doctor about Colorectal Cancer.

For anyone who has had a relative or friend pass away from Colorectal Cancer you know how painful this disease is. To watch someone you care about go through so much pain is heart breaking. You wish deep down inside “If only they had gotten a colonoscopy”.

There will be 143,000 new cases of colon cancer diagnosed this year. It is estimated that 5% to 10% of all colorectal cancers are explained by a heredity. Colon Cancer deaths can be cut by 53% if everyone had a colonoscopy.

It’s unclear what exact causes colorectal cancers, factors such as lack of exercise, poor diet and polyps are known to contribute to the disease. Research shows that eating a lot of fruit and vegetables can help prevent colorectal cancer along with maintaining a healthy weight, being active and restricted use of alcohol.

Some of you may not know what a colonoscopy entails.  This article from March of 2011 will explain what needs to be done prior to the procedure, what is done during the procedure and what to expect after the procedure.
