August 24 – National Waffle Day

Today is National Waffle Day!

It’s National Waffle Day! Today is the anniversary of the first U.S. patent for a waffle iron. Cornelius Swarthout of Troy, New York received his patent for a “device to bake waffles” in 1869. His early waffle iron was used in conjunction with coal stoves, consisted of a griddle and a cover and required flipping of the device to cook both sides of the waffle.

Waffles are a delightful breakfast food and can be paired with almost any topping. Butter and maple syrup, fruit and whipped cream, a big scoop of ice cream, or even a helping of fried chicken—the choice is yours!

Did you know that the first waffles originated in Ancient Greece? It’s true! The Greeks would cook flat cakes called “obelios” between two metal pans held over a fire. Today, all you need is a waffle iron and a yummy recipe for waffle batter.

To celebrate National Waffle Day, cook up some homemade waffles and have breakfast-for-dinner tonight! Enjoy!

Since today is also National Peach Pie Day how about making a nice Caramel Peach Sauce to spoon over your homemade waffles. I grabbed this from Miss Martha herself.

The tournament was founded by Will Shortz in 1978, who still directs the tournament today. He is a creator of crossword puzzles and is currently the New York Times crossword puzzle editor.

There are eight original crosswords created and edited especially for this tournament. Scoring is based on speed and accuracy, with prizes awarded in more than 20 categories, including a $5,000 grand prize.
