How to Toggle Between Tabs

I hate having to take my hands off the keyboard, like when I reach for the mouse to switch between tabs in my browser. It’s particularly annoying when I have a bunch of tabs open and the two I’m hopping between are separated by a bunch of other tabs. So, I wanted to share some info I found while doing some research. Once I found this it helped me speed up my work.

Browser Tabs

Instructions

  • Open a new tab in Internet Explorer, Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox by pressing the “Ctrl” and “T” keys simultaneously. You will be able to toggle, or move back and forth, between two or more open tabs.
  •

  • Access one of the open tabs by clicking on it.
  •

  • Hold down the “Ctrl,” “Shift” and “Tab” keys simultaneously to move to the previous tab. Alternatively, press the “Ctrl” and “Page Up” or “Page Down” keys simultaneously.
  •

  • Hold down the “Ctrl” and “Tab” keys simultaneously to toggle to the next tab. Press “Ctrl” and “9” to click to the last, or rightmost, tab. Press “Ctrl” and one of the number keys between 1 and 8 to access a specific tab. These steps work in Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Firefox.
  •

  • In Internet Explorer, you can press “Ctrl” and “Q” simultaneously to see screen shots of all of the open tabs displayed in one window.

  •

Small Business Saturday

Small Business Saturday is an American shopping holiday held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year. First celebrated on November 27, 2010, it is a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which feature big box retail and e-commerce stores respectively. By contrast, Small Business Saturday encourages holiday shoppers to patronize brick and mortar businesses that are small and local.

In 2010 the holiday was conceived and promoted by American Express via a nationwide radio and television advertising campaign. That year Amex bought advertising inventory on Facebook, which it in turn gave to its small merchant account holders, and also gave rebates to new customers to promote the event.

American Express publicized the initiative using social media, advertising, and public relations. At least 41 local politicians and many small business groups in the United States issued proclamations concerning the campaign, which generated more than one million Facebook “like” registrations and nearly 30,000 tweets under the Twitter hashtags #smallbusinesssaturday (which had existed since early 2010) and #smallbizsaturday.

Cinda Baxter, founder of The 3/50 Project, was national spokesperson for Small Business Saturday its first year. The 3/50 Project encourages consumers to commit to spending $50 of their current monthly budgets with independently owned small businesses they care about.

The Twitter hashtag #SmallBusinessSaturday has existed since early 2010 and was used to promote small businesses on any Saturday (not solely that Saturday between Black Friday and Cyber Monday). The hashtag is used in a manner similar to #FollowFriday to highlight favorite local businesses.

October 29 – Internet Day

Today is Internet Day!

Most of us were introduced to the World Wide Web in the mid-1990s as it made its way into homes and offices.

I remember having AOL, as everyone did, and waiting for a page to load, only to have it time out and crash 50% of the time. Well, believe it or not, the basis for that technology was already several years old.

The first Internet transmission over the ARPANET actually occurred by UCLA student programmer Charley Kline, at 10:30 p.m., on Oct. 29, 1969. Supervised by Prof. Leonard Kleinrock, Kline transmitted from the university’s SDS Sigma 7 Host computer to the Stanford Research Institute’s SDS 940 Host computer. The message text was the word “login”; the “l” and the “o” letters were transmitted, but the system then crashed.

ARPANET, Advanced Research Projects Agency Network, was the beginning of the internet as we know it today. ARPANET was the world’s first operational packet switching network and the progenitor of what was to become the global Internet. The network was initially funded by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA, later DARPA) within the U.S. Department of Defense for use by its projects at universities and research laboratories in the US.
