Strawberry Cream Pie With Sugar Cookie Crust

Did you know that 70% of a strawberry cream pie’s weight comes from the strawberries themselves? That’s a lot considering that the fruit isn’t even in season in September!

When you set out to find the perfect strawberry cream pie there are many variations from which to choose. Some recipes use cream cheese in the filling while others call for whipped cream or custard. Crusts can be sweet or savory, strawberries can be whole or whipped into a mousse, and there are dozens of different toppings.

Find your favorite kind of strawberry cream pie or sample a selection to celebrate Strawberry Cream Pie Day!

August 25 – National Banana Split Day

Today is National Banana Split Day!

Since the turn of the century young and old have enjoyed this creamy dessert. Perfect for a hot summer’s day the banana split is a variation of the ice cream sundae. A split banana in a long dish topped with a scoop each of vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate ice creams, whipped cream, nuts and a cherry. That’s the basic banana split; add hot fudge, candied pineapple or strawberry sauce. Use your imagination.

While the origins of this holiday are unknown, David Evans Strickler, an apprentice pharmacist, is credited as the “inventor” of these fabulous desserts when he created them at the Tassel Pharmacy in Pennsylvania in 1904.

Celebrate National Banana Split Day by setting up a banana split buffet, invite your friends over and enjoy!

August 24 – National Waffle Day

Today is National Waffle Day!

It’s National Waffle Day! Today is the anniversary of the first U.S. patent for a waffle iron. Cornelius Swarthout of Troy, New York received his patent for a “device to bake waffles” in 1869. His early waffle iron was used in conjunction with coal stoves, consisted of a griddle and a cover and required flipping of the device to cook both sides of the waffle.

Waffles are a delightful breakfast food and can be paired with almost any topping. Butter and maple syrup, fruit and whipped cream, a big scoop of ice cream, or even a helping of fried chicken—the choice is yours!

Did you know that the first waffles originated in Ancient Greece? It’s true! The Greeks would cook flat cakes called “obelios” between two metal pans held over a fire. Today, all you need is a waffle iron and a yummy recipe for waffle batter.

To celebrate National Waffle Day, cook up some homemade waffles and have breakfast-for-dinner tonight! Enjoy!

Since today is also National Peach Pie Day how about making a nice Caramel Peach Sauce to spoon over your homemade waffles. I grabbed this from Miss Martha herself.
